For nearly three quarters of a century,
credit unions have provided Vermont consumers with access to quality
financial products and services. In fact, Roy F. Bergengren, one of
the founding fathers of the American Credit Union movement and the
first Managing Director of the Vermont Credit Union League, established many
Green Mountain State credit unions that still exist to this day.
From the early days to the
present day, the credit union philosophy has always been:
“not for
profit, not for charity, but for service”
Credit unions began when groups
of employees, groups of worshippers and groups of community
residents banded together in a spirit of cooperation and pooled
their resources for the benefit of all. This also has not changed
with the passage of time.
Today, people who live, work or
worship within a community can belong to a credit union and experience
the same benefits as those early members did. Just like today, these members
of a cooperative owned their financial institution, and had
a democratic voice in credit union elections and operations.
It is our goal to provide you
with some information about credit unions to help clarify who we are
and what we do in our continuing effort to serve the financial needs
of Vermont consumers. We also offer resources and advice on a
variety of topics which range from home buying to rebuilding credit
to helping plan for a college education. We invite you to
explore.
