Alert Details

WCAX TV is reporting the following (excerpted verbatim from their website):

Two warnings from police in Williston and Rutland City about very similar phone scams.

Williston Police say some residents have received calls from someone claiming to represent the New England Federal Credit Union. That person claims accounts have been deactivated due to suspicious activity and then asks for credit card information and pin numbers to reactivate the accounts.

And Rutland City Police are reporting an identical phone scam, except this automated voice claims to represent the Heritage Family Credit Union.

Both departments say this is a scam. They say if you get one of these calls report it to your bank and to your local police agency.

New England FCU has posted the following announcement on its website:

There have recently been fraudulent phone calls in which a recorded voice claims to be from NEFCU. The message says that an account has been deactivated due to suspicious activity, and asks for entry of a card number.

NEFCU will never request an entire card number from you and such requests should be ignored. If you have responded to a call like this by sharing your private information, please contact a Member Service Representative at 800-400-8790 immediately.

Heritage Family FCU has posted the following announcement on its website:

The credit union has been alerted of scam artists who are identifying themselves as calling from credit unions, and asking members to enter their account number, expiration date and CVV2/CVC2. Remember, the credit union will NEVER contact you asking for personal information. If you feel you are a victim of fraud, please call Heritage Family at 888.252.8932.
